How to Specify an Expanded Metal Ceiling Panel

A clear panel brief connects the mesh reference to the finished module, perimeter construction and ceiling interface.

1. Identify the mesh pattern and direction

Expanded metal is made by slitting and drawing sheet into an open pattern. The strands and bonds are continuous parts of the sheet rather than separate wires crossing one another. Pattern naming and measurement conventions can vary, so include a marked drawing or a sample reference whenever possible.

For a directional mesh, mark the intended orientation on the reflected ceiling plan. If the supplier uses long-way and short-way dimensions, state the convention and identify the direction on the panel elevation. Do not rely on a photo alone to communicate the exact opening or strand dimensions.

Useful mesh inputs

  • Mesh designation or reference sample.
  • Opening dimensions and strand/bond details, if known.
  • Long-way and short-way orientation as shown on the drawing.
  • Whether a flattened or raised appearance is intended, if this distinction applies.

2. Define the finished panel—not only the mesh sheet

A ceiling order usually needs a defined finished component. State the overall width and length, quantity, perimeter condition and visible face. Add a section drawing for a folded return, separate frame, corner detail, splice, access opening or other formed feature. If an item is not yet designed, mark it as open for review rather than implying a standard solution.

Include tolerances only when the design team has specified them. The manufacturing route must confirm achievable tolerances and flatness for the selected material, panel size and construction.

3. Record material and finish requirements

List the specified metal and grade, sheet thickness and finish reference when those are known. For a colored or coated panel, include the color standard or sample, gloss/texture expectation, visible faces and any project environment information. Ask the supplier to identify the actual substrate and coating system proposed for review.

Appearance is not performance evidence. A colored panel photo cannot establish alloy, pretreatment, coating thickness, corrosion resistance or service life.

4. Show how the panel meets the ceiling

Share the carrier or support profile, engagement point, fixing arrangement, joint gap and retention requirement. Mark lighting, sprinklers, access panels and other services against the ceiling layout. If compatibility with an existing system is requested, provide a profile drawing, sample or system reference for checking; the name of a system alone is not enough to verify fit.

This information supports a panel-interface review. It does not imply that a panel supplier also provides the complete suspension system or structural design.

Expanded metal ceiling RFQ checklist

  1. Project location and application environment.
  2. Ceiling plan, panel schedule, module sizes and quantities.
  3. Mesh reference, opening/strand details and orientation.
  4. Material, grade, thickness and finish/color reference.
  5. Edge, return, frame and corner drawings.
  6. Support profile, interface, service cut-outs and access needs.
  7. Inspection/sample approval, protective packing, labeling and destination.

Unknown inputs can be identified as questions for the quotation review. No standard size, finish range, minimum order or delivery time is assumed by this checklist.
